Product manufacturers, suppliers, and specifiers depend on third party reviewers to validate that safer and environmentally preferable ingredients are selected for industrial and commercial cleaning products. Retailers constantly make decisions about which products to offer on their shelves and use a variety of criteria to do so. The role of third-party reviewers in the USEPA’s Design for the Environment (DfE) program will be discussed along with an overview of the DfE formulator process. The benefits of CleanGredients’ online database as a resource of safer ingredients that meet the established requirements for improved environmental and human health performance will also be presented. The efforts of the Environmental Defense Fund to help Wal-Mart develop a framework to assess the presence of chemical hazards in formulated consumer products and to provide incentives for the use of safer chemicals will be described.
