- Houston Janitors Elect to Strike
June 6, 2012 — More than 3,200 custodial workers in Houston, TX, voted to strike over what they claim are threats and other misconduct from local janitorial contractors.
The workers, all members of the Service Employees International Union, agreed to the strike after a lack of progress in contract negotiations between the union and contractors, reports The Houston Chronicle. Eighty to 100 workers have already walked off the job at a downtown Houston office complex, and union leaders have stated that decisions affecting other city buildings will be made day to day.
