Legionnaires' Disease Outbreak Reported in Scotland

June 15, 2012 — The U.K. National Health Service (NHS) has confirmed 17 cases of Legionnaires’ disease, including two fatalities, in Edinburgh, Scotland.

NHS officials continue to investigate the exact source of the outbreak, but industrial cooling towers have been identified as a potential source of the infection, reports Facilities Management Journal. The cooling systems at four facilities in Edinburgh have been subject to additional chemical treatments and cleanings in an attempt to control the spread of the disease.
