- Janitor Strike Delays School Opening in Rhode Island
August 28, 2012 — A custodial and support worker strike has delayed the opening of schools in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.
Representatives of the North Kingstown Educational Support Professionals Association agreed to strike Monday after failing to reach an agreement with the North Kingstown school district, reports WJAR-TV in Providence, RI. The union represents more than 150 of the of the district's support staff, including custodians, maintenance workers, cafeteria staff, and bus drivers. The workers are protesting the school district’s decision to outsource 26 custodial positions.
