July 18, 2012 — ISSA and the Cleaning Industry Research Institute (CIRI) have begun the process of developing a Clean Standard for K-12 schools.
After recently completing three years of extensive field research, both organizations have completed the collection, analysis, and verification of the data necessary to support the Clean Standard: K-12. The standard ultimately will promote clean and healthy indoor environments in educational facilities across the United States to the benefit of children’s learning experiences.
A 27-member development committee composed of a diverse group of stakeholders from the educational, facilities management, and cleaning industries will review the research data and specify quantitative and qualitative levels of acceptable cleaning in the Standard. The committee also will specify measurement methods and the management and technical skills necessary to implement the Standard. The Clean Standard: K-12 will be performance oriented and nonprescriptive.
In addition, a stakeholder committee composed of more than 60 organizations has been formed to review the work of the development committee and to provide feedback on various draft versions of the Standard. The committees will meet repeatedly over the next several months, including at ISSA/INTERCLEAN® North America 2012, to develop and review the Standard. Additionally, the Clean Standard: K-12 will be the focus of a joint CIRI and ISSA symposium expected to take place in mid-2013.
