June 27, 2012 — The number of deaths attributed to the 2009 H1N1 (swine flu) pandemic might be 15 times higher than previously reported, according to a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.
The World Health Organization originally attributed 18,500 deaths to the 2009 pandemic, reports CNN. The new study estimates that the actual number of fatalities could range anywhere from 151,700 to 575,400 people worldwide. Researchers attribute the discrepancy in fatalities to many developing nations lacking the proper technology to accurately identify H1N1-related deaths.
