Hawaii Cleaning Contractor to Pay $1.1 Million in Back Wages

May 11, 2017

Representatives of Hawaii’s hospitality workers’ Union Local 5 have reached a US$1.1 million settlement with local contractor Hawaii Care and Cleaning.

The union had filed a grievance on behalf of 58 janitors who stated they were underpaid from 2007-13. The workers previously had filed a federal lawsuit claiming they were due union wages under a collective bargaining agreement signed with Hawaii Care and Cleaning. The settlement also calls for Hawaii Care and Cleaning to assume the janitors’ attorney’s fees related to the federal lawsuit, Honolulu Civil Beat reports
