Election Candidates for 2017 Board of Directors


The election for the ISSA Board of Directors positions will be held electronically June 19-July 20, 2017. The newly elected officers and directors will take office at the General Meeting at ISSA/INTERCLEAN® North America 2017 in Las Vegas, NV,  and serve on the Board of Directors 2017-2019.

Vice President/President Elect Candidate

Paul Goldin, Avmor Ltd., Laval, Canada
I am seeking to serve as vice president/president elect on the ISSA Board of Directors because I believe in ISSA’s role as a leader in the cleaning industry. My previous experiences as an ISSA board member and Young Executive Society (YES) coordinator as well as the training I have received through ISSA have given me unique insight into the organization’s strength. I am especially interested in helping ISSA become a truly international organization. Avmor has a long history of leadership in ISSA, and it would be my privilege to continue this legacy.

About the Candidate:
Paul Goldin is currently vice president of professional cleaning solutions at Avmor Ltd. in Laval, Canada. Since joining Avmor in 1998, he has been involved in many aspects of Avmor’s business, including sales, marketing, customer service, operations, research and development, and government regulation. He has been a driving force in the company’s focus on sustainability and was instrumental in Avmor achieving ISO 14001:2004 certification for environmental management and EcoLogo’s certification for more than 50 Avmor products. 

In addition to his certificate from the ISSA Green Cleaning University, he is a Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS) ISSA Certification Expert (I.C.E.) and an ISSA Cleaning Industry Training Standard (CITS) Accredited Certification Trainer (A.C.T.) He also has served as a YES coordinator (2006-12), and as YES secretary-treasurer, and on the ISSA Board of Directors as director Canada (2014-16.) He also served on the ISSA Canada (formerly Canadian Sanitary Supply Association) board as secretary-treasurer (2010-11). His community involvement includes serving on various boards related to education and sports. He is a graduate of Concordia University. 

Executive Officer Candidates

Jim Chittom, Jr., Roman Chemical Corp., Rome, GA. 
“What greater call does our industry have than changing the way the world views cleaning? I am running for the ISSA Board of Directors to promote appreciation for cleaning as an investment in human health and the environment. The organization has brought so much value to our companies, and I would consider it an honor to give back by serving our association as executive officer.”

About the Candidate:
Jim Chittom, Jr. president of Roman Chemical Corp., Rome, GA. He joined the cleaning industry in 1980 when he worked summers during high school at Roman Chemical’s sister company, Athens Janitor Supply Co. After graduating in 1987 from the University of Georgia with a degree in economics, he chose to dedicate his career to this industry, and in 1990 became president of Roman Chemical. He has a long history of service and commitment to ISSA, which has included service as YES director (1997-2000) and on the ISSA Board of Directors (2011-13). He is also currently serving on the Triple-S Board of Directors. Outside the industry, he is active in his church and serves on several local boards.

Leland Fishman, Fishman Supply Co., Petaluma, CA
“Whether it was the value provided by the educational seminars at the show [ISSA/INTERCLEAN® North America], the networking on the floor, or just the friends made nationwide, the knowledge received over the years as an ISSA member has been invaluable. With my two sons now actively involved in Fishman Supply, the time is right to offer my services back to ISSA to help further its mission and insure its viability as the leading resource to the cleaning industry. Therefore, it is my honor to offer myself as a candidate for executive officer of ISSA for the 2017 election year. As president of Fishman Supply Co., an ISSA member since 1980, I share ISSA’s values and mission and will work tirelessly to further its vision to be the leading resource for information, education, networking, and commercial opportunities as well as the leading voice in government and the community for firms within the cleaning industry worldwide. I appreciate your consideration for this role.”

About the Candidate:
Leland Fishman has been actively involved in the cleaning industry since 1981 when he joined Fishman Supply as its first full-time sales representative. Since then, the company has grown more than 30 times in size, and today employs 40-plus people in sales, distribution, and support. He served on the ISSA board as a distributor director (2009-11).

In addition to his professional experience, he is a 15-year member of Rotary International, a past board trustee for Petaluma Valley Hospital, and a past board member for the Boys and Girls Club of Southern Sonoma County. 

Manufacturer Director Candidate

Tom Friedl, Hospeco, Cleveland, OH
“Hospeco has been an ISSA member for more than 70 years, and many of my predecessors have been active on the board and in the organization. Over my 20-plus years at Hospeco, I have watched with pride as ISSA has solidified its position as a worldwide leader and influencer in the cleaning industry. I would be pleased to bring my capabilities honed at Hospeco to help further ISSA’s growth.”

About the Candidate:
Tom Friedl is president and CEO of Hospeco, a leading manufacturer of cleaning and protection products serving the away-from-home marketplace. Throughout his 20-plus year career with Hospeco, he has held executive leadership positions in operations, finance, and sales, leading up to his appointment as president and CEO in 2015. Founded in 1919, Hospeco is a charter member of ISSA. He has been on the ISSA/INTERCLEAN Committee for the past two years. As a leader in his community, he has served on the local school board as an advisory member, is a member of Kiwanis, and has been treasurer and a board member of his city’s local baseball league for more than 10 years. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton and an MBA from Case Western Reserve University.

Distributor Director Candidate

Paul Barrett, North American Corp., Glenview, IL
“How we navigate and take advantage of industry change or disruption will shape the future of ISSA and its members. My experiences over the past 30 years will provide insights to help address and manage the challenges and opportunities that we face as an industry. To that end, I look forward to working with the board on issues like enabling technology, workforce evolution, and the value of services and differentiation that will undoubtedly define our future.”

About the Candidate:
Paul Barrett is vice president of independent distributor North American Corp., Glenview, IL, where he is responsible for its industrial division, operations, marketing, strategy, and corporate development. Most recently, he spent eight years at Essendant as its chief operating officer of industrial and automotive. His prior experience includes serving as president and vice president of Lagasse, during which time he served on Essendant’s foundation board, and 18 years at global office products manufacturer ACCO Brands, where he held various positions in sales, marketing and operations, and management. His community service includes serving on the board of Beacon Place, a nonprofit organization serving communities in Waukegan, IL.

BSC Director Canidate

Matt Vonachen, Vonachen Group, Peoria, IL
“I believe my 30 years of experience in the cleaning industry qualifies me to represent the building service contractor (BSC) sector membership group. Having been a manufacturer representative, distributor, and now a BSC, I have had the opportunity to experience our industry from all three perspectives. If elected, I will represent you with my commitment to hard work and integrity.”

About the Candidate:
Matt Vonachen is president and CEO of the Vonachen Group, a full-service facility maintenance company headquartered in Peoria, IL. He grew up in the cleaning industry, starting his career as a sales representative for Rubbermaid Commercial Products. In the early 1990s, he joined the family distribution business, Vonachen Industrial Supplies, as sales manager. In the late ’90s, the business became part of AmSan, now known as Supply Works, where he worked in several different capacities from sales leader to general manager to Midwest regional president.

Active in the industry, he most recently finished a six-year term as a director of the Building Service Contractors Association International. His community service includes serving as a trustee of St. Thomas Catholic Church and as a member of the OSF Foundation hospital board.
