Costco Implements Chemical Smart Screening Program

Costco has updated its “smart screening” program and will not sell products with harmful chemicals or ingredients the company views as raising social or regulation concerns.

Costco updated its list of screened items to include furniture and clothing-care goods, cleaning supplies, and a large variety of other items. Each category tested will have a personalized list of prohibited chemicals or “chemicals of concern” (COC). The official list of Costco’s COCs has not yet been released to the public. To improve the results of this program, the mega-retailer has also begun partnering with academic institutions, according to the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families coalition
