Essity Invests in Geothermal Steam Power

October 6, 2021

Essity has announced a US$11 million investment in the company’s Kawerau, New Zealand production facility.

The funds will be used to enhance energy efficiency at the plant, which has produced TORK brand products for Essity’s New Zealand customers for more than 65 years. As part of the enhancements, Essity will install the world’s first tissue machine to run a fully geothermal steam drying process. The improvements are predicted to reduce the Kawerau facility’s carbon emissions by nearly 25%.

“We´re setting new industry standards when it comes to sustainable tissue production. Investing in the world’s first tissue machine running a fully geothermal steam process is groundbreaking. By reducing our carbon emissions, we can offer our customers and consumers more climate friendly products,” said Magnus Groth, Essity CEO.
