Sporadic Start to Flu Season

October 23, 2018

Seasonal influenza activity is low across the United States, with sporadic flu activity reported in 40 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to the weekly report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

For the week ending October 13, the proportion of people seeing their health care provider for influenza-like illness was 1.4 percent below the national baseline of 2.2 percent. Local influenza activity was reported by Guam and two states (Massachusetts and North Dakota). No flu activity was reported in eight states: Colorado, Illinois, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Virginia,

Despite the low flu activity, one pediatric death was reported this week. The death was in Florida and associated with an influenza A virus.
