USGBC Reveals Top States for LEED Buildings

February 10, 2021

Massachusetts has received the top rating in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building in 2020, according to a new list from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

USGBC’s annual list ranks states based on the number of LEED-certified square feet per person. Massachusetts certified 76 green building projects representing 2.91 square feet of LEED-certified space per resident. The state placed third in last year’s index.

Washington came in second with 2.82 square feet of LEED-certified space per resident, following by Illinois with 2.61 square feet. The remaining states in the top 10 included Colorado, New York, Maryland, California, Virginia, Texas, and Nevada.

Although Washington, D.C. did not appear in the official Top 10 list because of its status as a federal territory, it continues to consistently lead the nation and in 2020 it certified 39.53 square feet of space per resident across 129 green building projects.
