Cruise Health Inspection Failures Reach 10-Year High

In 2017, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 14 instances of cruise ships failing safety inspections, the highest number of inspection failures in 10 years, MarketWatch reports. In 2016, only two ships received a failing grade in a CDC inspection.

Actions that led to failed inspections ranged from minor incidents, such as the improper storage of mops and other cleaning equipment, to major violations such as catering crews handling food while suffering from gastrointestinal illness. Other violations listed in CDC inspection reports include fruit flies found near a buffet, cleaning solution that didn’t contain chlorine, and clean coffee carafes stored near soiled items.
