NSF International, a global public health organization, has published a new protocol outlining evaporative cooling system maintenance and safety practices to prevent Legionella bacteria, which causes Legionnaire’s Disease. The protocol addresses health concerns in commercial buildings, including healthcare facilities. It offers detailed instructions to help facility managers assemble a water safety team, identify potential hazards, and establish control measures to prevent the growth of Legionella bacteria.

About 5,000 cases of Legionnaires’ disease are reported each year in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
