NYC Battles Measles Outbreak

April 11, 2019

Bill de Blasio, mayor of New York, NY, has declared a health emergency in the city’s Brooklyn borough.

De Blasio’s order covers four zip codes in the city’s Williamsburg neighborhood. More than 250 people have contracted measles in that neighborhood since September 2018. The order also requires any unvaccinated individual who has been exposed to the virus to receive the MMR vaccine or face a fine of up to US$1,000, Fox News reports.

In addition, the New York City Health Department ordered schools in the area to exclude all unvaccinated students due to the outbreak. Any school that does not comply will face fines and possible closure.
