WHO Updates Antibiotic Advice

June 7, 2017

The World Health Organization (WHO) has updated its list of which antibiotics to use to treat particular types of illnesses.

WHO’s Model List of Essential Medicines for 2017 now contains 433 drugs deemed necessary for addressing the most common and important public illnesses. The major change to the antibiotics section divides treatment options for the 21 most common infections into three categories that dictate when to use particular types of medications. The change aims to combat drug-resistant bacteria and ensure that antibiotics remain effective, according to Infection Control Today.
