ISSA Webinar:  FDA’s New Rule on Healthcare Sanitizers
March 6, 2018 / 11:00 a.m. Central / 12:00 p.m. Eastern

Members of ISSA are invited to join us for a complimentary webinar on the topic of the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) latest rule that impacts hand sanitizers intended for use in the healthcare market.  The webinar is set for March 6, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Central / 12:00 p.m. Eastern / 9:00 a.m. Pacific.  To register for this webinar, click here.

This latest FDA rule bans the sale and marketing of over-the-counter (OTC) “health care antiseptic products” containing triclosan or any of 23 other active ingredients.  The term “health care antiseptic products” includes products that make antibacterial claims and are intended for:

  • Health care personnel hand washes (intended to be rinsed off with water)
  • Health care personnel hand rubs (not intended to be rinsed off with water)
  • Surgical hand scrubs
  • Surgical hand rubs
  • Patient antiseptic skin preparations (i.e., patient preoperative and preinjection skin preparations)

Such products are commonly marketed to health care providers and used primarily in medical settings like hospitals, health care clinics, and doctors’ offices.

The final rule is effective Dec. 20, 2018.  On that date non-compliant products may no longer be marketed or sold.

Instructor.  ISSA is honoured to have as its guest instructor, Rhonda Jones, RM (NRM) who is president of Scientific & Regulatory Consultants, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in regulatory and scientific affairs relating to antimicrobial pesticidal products.  Ms. Jones has over 24 years of experience in the antimicrobial/biocide industry, and has worked extensively on the FDA regulations for hand sanitizers.  Rhonda holds a microbiology degree from Indiana University and is a registered microbiologist with the National Registry of Microbiologists.
