As an international outbreak of Avian influenza—or bird flu—sweeps through the country, millions of chickens and other commercial poultry have been culled to stem the spread. Last week also saw the first documented case of human infection in the United States.

In this episode of BioTalk, a GBACtv production, Patty Olinger, the executive director of the Global Biorisk Advisory Council® (GBAC), a Division of ISSA, delves into how the current bird flu outbreak impacts the cleaning industry. While the concern of human-to-human transmission of avian influenza is low currently, the lessons learned from the COVID-19 outbreak can help prepare us for future pandemics. According to Olinger, cleaners and facility managers need to remain diligent in adhering to indoor air quality protocols and enforcing high-touch surface disinfection programs to continue to keep people safe.
