James A. Walsh U.S. Courthouse
Catholic Community Services of Southern Arizona, BSC
The James A. Walsh U.S. Courthouse serves as the home of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. Key areas include the public lobby and courtrooms, which uphold the building’s historical significance while supporting modern judicial functions.
Built between 1929 and 1930, this landmark originally functioned as a U.S. Post Office and Courthouse. It was later named in honor of James A. Walsh, Tucson’s only federal judge from 1952 to 1981.
A distinguished example of Neoclassical architecture, the courthouse features symmetrical design, grand proportions, and smooth stone surfaces. It also integrates Mission-style influences, most notably in its tiled hipped roof. Designed under James A. Wetmore, Supervising Architect of the Treasury, its construction was part of a nationwide federal building initiative during President Herbert Hoover’s administration.
Recognized for its historical and architectural significance, the courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Following a 2008 renovation, it continues to serve the judicial system while preserving its rich heritage.

Maintaining a historically significant building requires a delicate balance between preservation and cleanliness. Our cleaning team follows specialized methods and materials designed to protect the courthouse’s original features while ensuring a pristine environment.
The unique architectural details, such as stone surfaces, demand expert cleaning techniques to maintain their integrity and appearance. Our team is trained to handle these materials with care, preventing damage while preserving their historical value.
As a listed historic building, custodial work must adhere to strict preservation guidelines. This includes using approved cleaning products and techniques that align with heritage conservation standards.
