$17 Billion U.S. Residential Maid Services Industry Continues to Grow
Marketdata LLC, a leading independent market research publisher of “off-the-shelf” studies about SERVICE industries since 1979, has released a new 60-page market study entitled: The U.S. Residential Maid Services Industry. The study estimates national receipts from 2007-2030 forecasts, covers operating ratios, maids/worker profile, franchising, major industry trends and growth drivers, competitor profiles and more.
“This little-researched industry employs 228,000 workers, many of which are legal and illegal immigrants running solo operations off the books. However, there are also a lot of franchises and non-franchise independents that do have employees that are bonded and insured.”, according to Research Director, John LaRosa:
Major Findings:
- Revenues… Marketdata analysts estimate that the industry’s revenues were $17.2 billion in 2025, forecast to grow by 5.5% in 2026. A significant share of the industry’s receipts, 20-30%, are in cash and are not reported.
- Maids… Of the total 926,000 maids and housekeepers employed nationwide, about 228,000 of them work primarily for private households, with the remainder being employed by hotels and motels, healthcare facilities and other commercial and retail establishments. Nationwide, 27% of U.S. maids are illegal immigrants, estimates the Pew Research Centre.
- Franchises… The top 9 maid services franchises as a group have system-wide revenues of $1.36 billion, via 3,447 franchise units, representing about 8% of total industry receipts. The average total cost to purchase a maid service franchise ranges from $43,000 to $197,000, and royalties on sales usually range from 3-7% of sales, plus an advertising fee. The average yearly gross revenues per franchise for this group is $577,840.
- Industry Structure… The industry’s main trade group estimates that 67% of all maid service companies gross under $300,000 per year, and that there are 32,270 companies (3,900 of which are solo operators). Average annual sales are $358,00/year for their members.
- Consumer Demand… Approximately 16 % of U.S. households (22 million) use a maid or residential cleaning service — up strongly from just 8% in 2012. However, industry receipts do fall during recessions, when disposable income falls and this “luxury” service is cut from the budget.
- Competition… Independents are estimated to account for 74% of the total industry sales volume, and franchises for 26%.
- Outlook… The industry has been growing even during a disrupted pandemic period, with increased concern about health and hygiene helping to counteract the pandemic’s negative economic effects.
- As of early 2026, the average yearly income for residential maids and house cleaners in the U.S. is approximately $33,000–$37,600,
- Growth Drivers… Organized cleaning services and franchises have been around for about 25 to 30 years. Demand comes from an aging population, dual income affluent households, and Millennials (who tend to be time-pressed and live in apartments and cities).
“This is an industry where good data does not come easily. It’s not tracked separately by the Census Bureau and many of its operators are solo, with no trackable payroll for employees, or receipts. Add to that the high turnover of maids and the fact that many are immigrants from Latin America, Eastern Europe and Brazil choose this as an entry occupation, and you can see how tough it is to accurately estimate industry activity.”, according to John LaRosa.
