Five Ways Facilities Can Make an Impact This Arbor Day
Arbor Day is a reminder of the important role forests play in supporting Earth’s ecosystems. Sofidel, a leading global provider of paper for hygienic and domestic use, is recognizing the day by encouraging facilities to adopt practices that help protect forests and reduce environmental impact.
“Healthy forests are essential for a healthy planet,” said Tahnie Gilliland, Marketing Specialist, Sofidel. “Arbor Day is an opportunity to recognize the impact of our daily decisions and recommit to practices that support long-term environmental goals.”
Here are five ways facilities can honor Arbor Day:
- Plant a tree native to your region. Native trees require less water and maintenance, provide a habitat for local wildlife and help reduce air pollution. Even a single tree can help absorb hundreds of pounds of carbon over its lifetime.
- Choose paper products made from responsibly sourced fiber. Every purchase decision matters. When selecting paper products, look for Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certification labels, which help ensure the wood fiber comes from responsibly managed forests that protect biodiversity, workers’ rights, and long-term forest health.
- Reduce, reduce and recycle paper properly. Support sustainability efforts by placing clearly labeled recycling bins throughout the facility. In restrooms, use high-capacity, automatic paper towel dispensers to help minimize overconsumption and reduce waste.
- Support urban tree canopy programs. Urban trees help reduce the heat island effect, improve air quality and can even help lower energy costs. Consider volunteering with local tree-planting organizations or supporting community efforts.
- Educate employees. Use Arbor Day as an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of forest conservation and sustainable purchasing decisions through signage, internal communications or team initiatives.
