De schoonmaakindustrie groeit goed en gestaag door. Dit jaar zal de groei 4,8% bedragen. De economie is “booming” en groeit dit jaar met 2,5%. Hiermee is het weer terug op het niveau van net voor het begin van de financiele crisis.

• Groot tekort aan tewerkgestelde schoonmakers. Niet enkel jonge, maar ook ervaren werknemers.
• Door het tekort aan schoonmakers, zullen de lonen stijgen.
• Onder druk van het FM zal de BSC meer investeren in innovaties. Niet enkel in producten, maar ook in diensten.
• Meer investeringen in een verfijnde schoonmaak met gebruiksvriendelijk & productief materiaal en efficiënte schoonmaakmaterialen–en systemen.

Uit het oogpunt van de leveranciers vergt de schoonmaakindustrie alsmaar meer een 24/7 service. Snelle leveringen, on demand services met een gemakkelijk bestellingsproces en facturatiesystemen –en procedures. Verder moeten distributeurs een strategie kiezen, want ze kunnen niet alles doen. Ofwel kiest een distributeur voor specialisme en blijf je onafhankelijk je markt definiëren, ofwel groei je uit tot een logistieke speler met groot gemak voor de eindklant. Iets dat we steeds meer zien, zijn partnerships tussen bedrijven of bedrijven die een nationale groep vormen.

Het perspectief van FM: door de hogere eisen qua hygiëne en welzijn zie ik een trend dat er een toenemende aandacht is voor de waarde van kwalitatieve schoonmaak. Dit zal in de toekomst een groot positief effect hebben op de totale schoonmaakmarkt.

Overal, ook in de Benelux, creëren leveranciers van kantoormaterialen een sterkere positie. Traditionele distributeurs kunnen van hen leren door hun kenmerkende hoge gemaksniveau te bestuderen. Maar ook zij kunnen leren van die traditionele distributeurs. Zij kunnen leren hoe ze oplossingen voor schoonmaakproblemen moeten aanbieden en hoe ze hun personeel moeten trainen. Een mooie kans voor een samenwerking als je het mij vraagt. Een trend die we, vooral in de USA, zien is dat gespecialiseerde bedrijven een partnerschap aangaan met nationale logistieke bedrijven. The best of both worlds!

Als een algemeen doel voor nu en voor in de toekomst moeten we onze branche aantrekkelijker en toegankelijker maken voor ambitieuze jonge werknemers. Wij bieden een dynamische industrie aan met meer dan voldoende carrièremogelijkheden op internationaal niveau. Om dat wereldkundig te maken, om die jongvolwassenen aan te trekken, moeten we samenwerken. Ledereen in de schoonmaakindustrie moet die verantwoordelijkheid voelen en nemen.

Benelux Update: Strong Growth in the Cleaning industry

The cleaning industry is in general performing very well in the Benelux region. The economy is booming, back to the same level it was at before the 2008 financial crisis. The outlook is in strong, with growth again at 2.5 percent. The contract cleaning market is growing by 4.8 percent.

There are, however, some challenges for Building Service Cleaners (BSC) such as:

• Enormous lack of professional cleaners on the job: shortage of young as well as experienced people.
• Increasing wages in order to pay current staff due to the shortage of workers. This will have a strong negative effect on BSC’s profits in the coming years.
• Due to pressure from facility managers (FM), BSCs will have to invest more strongly in innovation, not only in products but also in services.
• Need for more investments in more efficient and sophisticated cleaning systems with easy to use and productive tools.

From a supplier’s perspective, the industry increasingly demands a 24/7 service, quick deliveries, and on-demand services with very convenient order and invoice procedures. Also, distributors need to refine their strategies, they can’t do everything. Distributors should decide whether to specialize in a certain field and define their niche market independently, or become a comprehensive logistic player, offering high-convenience to the customer (e.g. through online services). Other growing trends in the industry we see are the formation of partnerships as well as memberships in nation-wide groups.

Office supply companies are also gaining more significant positions in the Benelux cleaning industry. Traditional distributors can learn from their high level of convenience-orientated business and service practices; however, these office suppliers can learn how to offer solutions for cleaning problems and how to provide trainings on the job from traditional distributors. From my perspective, this is a great opportunity to work together. The trend, especially in the U.S., is to keep your niche while partnering up with a nation-wide logistical company, thus achieving the best of both worlds.

From the FM perspective there is an observable increase of attention to the value of cleaning, pushed by the need for higher standards of hygiene and well-being in the facilities. This could have a great positive effect on the cleaning market as a whole.

A general goal in the present and the future is the need to make the cleaning industry more attractive and open to giving ambitious youngsters an entrance. We can offer them a dynamic environment with plenty of career opportunities and an international platform. In order to make this fact better known and to make our industry easily accessible, we have to join forces. We all need to be aware of this responsibility.
