While the pandemic might be behind us, focusing on air quality, its cleanliness, and its health effects remains paramount. It’s not merely about eradicating germs, but about creating environments promoting well-being.

With the evolving landscape of building cleanliness and its impact on health and wellness, ISSA and its Global Biorisk Advisory Council® (GBAC) division have partnered with Allergy Standards Ltd. (ASL) to help businesses improve indoor air quality (IAQ) and the well-being of building tenants and guests. In fact, a special online training course (which comes with a certification of completion) has been created to help you with your IAQ goals moving forward. Check out the details: issa.com/healthier.

Recently, at ISSA Show North America 2023, I interviewed Dr. John McKeon, CEO of Allergy Standards and the principal of iAIR (indoor Air Innovation & Research) Group. We discussed the current state of affairs with post-pandemic IAQ and what it will take to make real improvements for the future of those who spend most of their time indoors.

One point we discussed was the challenge of returning to work, particularly the reluctance of people to return to office buildings, with many remaining empty. Dr. McKeon stressed the need for employers to provide a compelling reason for employees to return. This goes beyond cleanliness; it involves ensuring and proving that the building is healthy and safe.

Training cleaning professionals was another key topic of discussion. The industry must view cleaning professionals as more than just workers but as individuals who need empowerment and education. Elevating their skills and knowledge would result in better job performance as well as increased remuneration, with employees recognizing their essential role in ensuring quality and well-being in today’s workplaces.

Finally, I asked Dr. McKeon about the future. He was optimistic. And his attitude is infectious. We all need that same attitude.
