Products, Practice and Proof: A Formula for Healthcare Cleaning
Healthcare cleaning teams carry a heavy load. Staffing is short, turnover is constant and the pathogens they fight can’t be seen.
At ISSA Show North America 2026, Nov. 16-19 in Las Vegas, the ISSA Healthcare booth aims to connect those teams with partners and resources that can lighten it. Diversey, a Solenis company, is one of the booth’s sponsors.
Larinda Becker leads portfolio management and marketing for Diversey’s North American institutional business. The company has worked in healthcare environmental hygiene and infection prevention for decades and joined Solenis in 2023.
“We combine our industry experience, our chemistries, our tools and really service and support to help create safer and more satisfying environments of care in the healthcare field,” Becker said.
The three Ps of prevention
The biggest challenge Becker sees in the market is the push to do more with less. Her answer is what she calls the three Ps of prevention: products, practice and proof.
“Having products, procedures, proof … are really, really key and critical to make sure that we’re able to manage through with our customers the staffing shortages, the turnover, the changes,” she explained.
Practice means standardized processes that make sure every surface gets cleaned and disinfected and that staff clearly understand their roles. Proof tackles the problem of invisible germs. Diversey uses a validation system that lets workers see whether a surface was actually cleaned, which builds confidence in repeatability and shows where surfaces get missed.
“It’s the best training tool I’ve ever used out in the industry, in the field,” Becker said.
Linda Lybert, executive director of the Healthcare Surfaces Institute, a division of ISSA, and lead of ISSA Healthcare, agreed with the approach. “We’re being asked to do something that is impossible to do, and that’s to make sure that the surfaces are clean in the environment, and they have a process for doing that,” she said. “That’s just absolutely critical.”
Keep the job simple
Many healthcare organizations chase the next new product or technology. Becker would rather see them focus on consistency over complexity.
“The biggest thing is making sure that you have reliable execution of the fundamentals back to basics,” she noted. That means clear, standardized processes, knowing which products to use when and where, and training that continues rather than happening once.
Becker pointed out that product choice is only one piece. “It’s being able to say, where do you use it? How often? Who does what when?” she said.
Becker, who has spent more than 15 years in cleaning, disinfection and infection prevention, sees unclear roles as a common gap. “We have a cleaning staff, we have a clinical staff, who cleans the commode? If you don’t define who does what, when and where, things get missed,” she said. On audits, she has watched three different people clean the same operating room surface.
A hub for healthcare at the show
The ISSA Healthcare booth, No. 2433, serves as a central stop for attendees looking for healthcare-focused exhibitors in a very large show. Each sponsor will present a 15-minute talk on a topic of its choice, followed by 15 minutes of networking with attendees. The booth will also host a networking happy hour on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
New this year is the booth’s first scavenger hunt, sponsored in part by Diversey. Participants will visit the Diversey booth, complete an activity and meet the company’s experts along the way.
“We’re really working this year to connect people, to build networking opportunities, and bring the healthcare professionals and businesses together at the show. Lybert said.
