Midlab and Spartan Achieve First Green Seal Certifications for Floor Care Products Formulated Without PFAS
Global non-profit Green Seal® today announced the first floor care products certified to be formulated without any intentionally added per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Midlab’s Maxim Zinc-Free High Traffic Floor Finish and Spartan Chemical’s FloorFront floor finish are leaders in meeting Green Seal’s rigorous PFAS criteria, putting them at the forefront of the movement to eliminate so-called “forever chemicals” from products.
Earlier this year, Green Seal became one of the first ecolabels to enact an across-the-board prohibition on any PFAS in floor care products. While PFAS commonly are used in floor coatings for their superior leveling and wetting properties, Midlab and Spartan developed innovative product formulas that use alternate ingredients without sacrificing performance.
“Midlab and Spartan are demonstrating extraordinary leadership by formulating their products without ‘forever chemicals’ while maintaining high performance,” said Doug Gatlin, CEO of Green Seal. “By achieving certification to Green Seal’s PFAS criteria, these companies are proving that safer chemistry is possible today — and they’re leading the industry toward a healthier, more sustainable future.”
“At Midlab, sustainability has never been a marketing tagline, it’s part of our DNA,” said Matt Schenk, president and CEO of Midlab. “We’ve always strived to lead the industry in real, measurable sustainable practices. Our journey toward no added PFAS formulations was a natural extension of that commitment.”
Leadership in Floor Care
PFAS commonly are used in floorcare products for properties such as gloss, leveling, stain resistance, and wettability. However, the carbon-fluorine bonds that make them so stable and effective also make them resistant to degradation, meaning they persist in the environment as so-called “forever chemicals.” PFAS are now found in the blood of most people around the world and are linked to numerous adverse health effects, including cancer, reproductive harm, and decreased immune response.
Buyers seeking safer alternatives now have two choices for floor finishes that are certified to avoid PFAS without sacrificing durability or effectiveness:
- Midlab’s Maxim Zinc-Free High Traffic floor finish
- Spartan Chemical’s FloorFront floor finish
Green Seal-certified products already meet some of the most rigorous benchmarks for material health and environmental performance in the marketplace, qualifying toward credits in both the LEED and WELL building standards. Certified products also have long been trusted by purchasers and are specified in hundreds of federal, state, corporate, and institutional purchasing policies. Now, Midlab and Spartan are the first to extend these benefits to floor care products that also are certified to be formulated without PFAS.
With Green Seal certification and products formulated without intentionally added PFAS, Midlab and Spartan are leading the transition toward safer chemistry and meeting growing customer demand for healthier, high-performing, and environmentally responsible solutions.
All previously certified floor care products must comply with Green Seal’s updated PFAS criteria by March 11, 2027. Find certified products in Green Seal’s product directory.
