South Korea Solidifies Roadmap for Mandatory Sustainability Reporting

In a move that reinforces the global acceleration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) transparency, South Korea has officially announced a phased roadmap to mandate sustainability reporting for its largest public companies beginning in 2028. This landmark regulatory shift, recently reported by ESG Today, signals a critical turning point for industries worldwide—including the global cleaning and facility management sector—as ESG disclosure moves from a voluntary “best practice” to a baseline requirement for doing business.

The South Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC) revealed that mandatory disclosures will first apply to KOSPI-listed firms with consolidated assets exceeding 30 trillion won (approx. $20.8 billion) in 2028, expanding to firms with 10 trillion won in assets by 2029. Crucially, the roadmap includes a path toward “Scope 3” reporting—emissions across the entire value chain—beginning in 2031.

A Global Trend: Risk Reduction and Better Decision-Making

The developments in Korea are part of a broader, unstoppable global trend. From the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) to new mandates in California and Australia, regulators are increasingly requiring standardized data on environmental impact.

For the cleaning industry—which relies heavily on complex supply chains, chemical manufacturing, and labor-intensive operations—these reporting requirements are more than just a compliance hurdle. They serve as a powerful tool for:

  • De-risking Operations: Identifying vulnerabilities in the supply chain, such as resource scarcity or regulatory fines, before they impact the bottom line.
  • Informed Decision-Making: Using standardized ESG data to drive operational efficiency, reduce waste, and optimize resource use.
  • Improving Profitability: Research consistently shows that companies with robust ESG reporting capabilities gain better access to capital and enjoy greater long-term resilience.

A Message to the Cleaning Industry

As South Korea aligns its domestic standards with the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), the message to the global cleaning industry is clear: the era of “greenwashing” is ending, and the era of “green reporting” has arrived. Companies that proactively adopt rigorous reporting structures today will find themselves at a competitive advantage as transparency becomes a prerequisite for procurement and partnership.

“Sustainability reporting is no longer just about being a good corporate citizen; it’s about business intelligence,” said Steve Ashkin, cochair of ISSA’s Sustainability Committee. “The roadmap in South Korea confirms that the global marketplace is demanding a new level of accountability. For our industry, this means an opportunity to prove the value of sustainable innovations through hard, verifiable data.”
