New Mexico Public Schools to Provide Free Menstrual Products

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a bill last week that will make free menstrual products available in every public school, according to the NM Political Report.

HB 134, sponsored by state Rep. Christine Trujillo, D-Albuquerque, requires a menstrual product dispenser in every girl’s restroom in every public elementary, middle, and high school. It also requires a dispenser in one boy’s restroom in each school. The dispensers will provide free products.

Several young women who spoke during a recent New Mexico legislative session said access to free menstrual products eliminates shame and helps students stay focused on their studies and extracurricular activities. Advocates for the bill said its passage will help with school attendance and learning, as students can focus better when their immediate health needs can be addressed in the schools.

ISSA supports the movement to make menstrual products available free of charge in public restrooms.

“Thank you to the New Mexico state legislature for passing and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham for signing this important piece of legislation to address period poverty in the state,” said John Nothdurft, Director of Government Affairs for ISSA. “Since launching our End Period Poverty campaign at the ISSA Show North America last October, we have seen a ton of action by governments, facility managers, and the cleaning industry to address the lack of access to menstrual care products in away from home bathrooms. ISSA will continue to engage our members and advocate for public policies related to increasing access to menstrual care dispenser and disposal solutions in restrooms. As we often say, these hygiene products should be as available as toilet paper, paper towels, and soap.”
