Tennant Co. has named Izet Subasic grand prize winner of its fifth annual Custodians Are Key recognition program.

First launched in September 2019, the annual program recognizes the work K–12 custodians are doing in educational facilities across the United States. This year’s campaign theme was a school yearbook, providing a look back through the past four years of the contest while highlighting the current and past custodians who keep schools safe, clean, and healthy.

Subasic, a custodian at Saint Ambrose on the Hill Catholic School in St. Louis, Missouri, was one of 12 finalists chosen from nearly 1,700 nominations from the U.S. and Canada. He will receive a US$15,000 prize package, which includes $5,000 for him and $10,000 for his school.

Subasic was nominated by Emily Elmore, a fourth-grade teacher at Saint Ambrose. She highlighted his efforts in going above and beyond to create a welcoming and supportive environment for students and staff. Elmore also noted that Izet is originally from Bosnia and worked hard to learn English, often with the help of the school’s students. He recently passed the U.S. citizenship test and was extremely proud to vote in his first election.
