Internet of Things (IoT) and the Cleaning Industry Report

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a global technological phenomenon that has begun to impact businesses and consumers at a profound level. According to global research firm Gartner, Inc., IoT is defined as “the network of physical objects that contain embedded technology to communicate and sense or interact with their internal states or the external environment.”

At a fundamental level, examples of IoT technology in the commercial cleaning industry today include products such as restroom dispensers, floor care equipment, and other devices in which sensors are embedded to capture usage data, location coordinates, etc., which are made available for review via the internet.

IoT technology can have numerous benefits, including streamlined workflow for frontline workers, waste reduction, improved asset management, and an overarching ability for managers to make data-driven decisions. However, as the technology is in early stages in our industry in terms of adoption, stakeholders face challenges with IoT such as staff training, implementation, and systems compatibility.

ISSA Research

In the fall of 2017, ISSA embarked on a research initiative to determine the state of IoT technology in the cleaning industry and understand what the future of IoT may entail for our member organizations and industry stakeholders.

The research began with a survey of ISSA members to gather information on their experience with, adoption of, and outlook on IoT in the cleaning industry. From there, ISSA convened a group of members with experience and interest in IoT in focus groups in May 2018. This research forms the foundation of the reports and resources below, which we expect to expand upon in the months to come.
