3M Announces Winner of 2022 Young Scientist Challenge

October 20, 2022 3M Announces Winner of 2022 Young Scientist Challenge

3M, in partnership with Discovery Education, has named Leanne Fan from San Diego, California, the winner of its 2022 Young Scientist Challenge.

The 15th-annual middle school competition called for students in grades 5–8 to submit a video demonstrating an innovation that could provide a solution to an everyday problem. A panel of judges then selected 10 finalists who were paired with a 3M scientist to create a prototype of their invention that solves the problem they identified.

Fan, a ninth grader at Westville High School, developed Finsen Headphones, an antibiotic-free, low-cost option to detect and treat a middle-ear infection using machine learning and blue light therapy. As the winning entry, she will receive US$25,000. To learn more about the Young Scientist Challenge, click here.
