October 14, 2020 ISSA Coronavirus Government Response Update—McConnel Claims Senate Will Vote Next Week on COVID-19 Relief

Welcome to the ISSA Coronavirus Government Response Update. This information is intended to keep our members up to date on government affairs related to the cleaning industry and COVID-19. Today’s update touches on the U.S. Senate voting on another COVID-19 relief bill, a Wisconsin judge upholding a state mask mandate, becoming an ISSA Advocate for Clean, and more.

McConnell Slates October Revote on GOP COVID Relief Plan
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (KY-R) said on Tuesday that he is scheduling a procedural vote on a GOP COVID-19 relief bill next week, pushing aid to hard-hit businesses in a “smaller-bore” approach to virus relief that Democrats say they will not support, The Associated Press (AP) reported. McConnell says that the first item of Senate business when the chamber returns next Monday will be a procedural vote on a scaled-back aid bill. Democrats filibustered a GOP-drafted aid bill last month and recent talks on a larger deal between U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA-D) fell apart this past weekend.

Wisconsin Judge Upholds Mask Order for Enclosed Spaces
A Wisconsin judge on Monday allowed the state’s mask mandate to stand, rejecting an attempt by the Republican-controlled legislature and a conservative law firm to overturn it, even as coronavirus cases spiked and the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 hit a new high there, according to AP. The judge noted in his ruling that lawmakers could vote to overturn Democratic Governor Tony Evers’ order, but have not thus far. Evers sent Republican legislative leaders a letter following the ruling asking them to drop the lawsuit and “work together on our state’s greatest challenges.” Noting a spike in cases and the opening of a field hospital to provide additional capacity for coronavirus patients, Evers urged Republicans to “start taking this seriously.”
