Key Congressional Committee Passes Immigration Measures

On May 22, the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee passed the “Dream Act of 2019” (HR 2820).   The bill would extend legal status and create a path to citizenship for the so-called “dreamers” who were brought to the United States illegally as children.

The committee also passed “The American Promise Act” (HR 2821), which would grant permanent resident status to immigrants who were covered by Temporary Protected Status (TPS) as of Jan. 1, 2017, and who have been continuously physically present in the U.S. for at least three years. 

Finally, the committee passed the “The Venezuela TPS Act”  (HR 549), which would grant TPS for an 18-month period to Venezuelans who have been continuously physically present the time that the bill is enacted.

All three bills were passed along a predominately party line vote.
