Norovirus Outbreak Hits Security Guards at Winter Olympics

February 6, 2018

Less than one week from the opening ceremonies of the XXIII Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, 1,2000 security guards were removed from duty following a norovirus outbreak, CNN reports.

After 41 of the guards were taken to the hospital with a sudden onset of vomit and diarrhea, South Korea replaced all the guards with 900 military personnel. The affected guards, who were all in stable condition, had been staying in the same building. Authorities from the Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention are testing water and food at all the Olympic accommodations. Winter Olympic committee members are strengthening inspections and cleaning schedules for sleeping quarters.
