U.S. Department of Labor Finalizes Overtime Rules
On September 24, the U.S. Department of Labor announced a final rule to make 1.3 million American workers newly eligible for overtime pay. The final overtime rules are much more reasonable than the original rule proposed in 2016. ISSA has been active in advocating for more sensible and workable overtime rules by submitting comments, attending public hearings, as well as engaging its 9,300 members on the issue. Employers must comply with the new rules on January 1, 2020.
Expert Focus: U.S. States in Tug-of-War with EPA over 1,4-dioxane Action
Brandon D Zeller, an associate with the law firm Goldberg Segalla, examines how various governments are looking to regulate 1,4-dioxane found in cleaning products and other personal care products. California, New York, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are considering taking very different approaches, and their actions could create confusion and problems for manufacturers, distributors, and users of products containing the compound.
ISSA Joins 162 Associations on Letter Opposing Tariff Increases
On September 20, Americans for Free Trade sent a letter to the United States Trade Representative (USTR) opposing 25% -30% tariff increases scheduled to take place on October 15. According to the release, “The letter highlights that tariffs just cost Americans US$6.8 billion in the month of July and that small and medium-sized businesses are bearing the brunt of the tariff increases. The letter is part of the public comment period on the October 15 tariff increases.” On September 24, U.S. President Donald Trump said a deal with China could come sooner than expected causing the stock market to jump.
